About this award

Every big thing starts as a small spark. The IGNICON Idea Award celebrates bold, brand-new thinking: the fix, the invention, the “why hasn’t anyone done this?” moment. It’s for dreamers who are also doers, in any industry, because great ideas don’t wait for a title or a budget. Adult nominees must be 18 or older; for younger achievers, explore Junior IGNICON.

Who can enter?

  • Leaders whose work or impact fits this distinction
  • Nominations from others are welcome and free

What did they accomplish?

  • A clear account of the person or work
  • Specific actions and their effects
  • Voices of people who benefited

Special honors are not tied to one industry, so criteria differ from industry awards.

Make their story count

Who should be nominated

  • Someone with an original idea that solves a real problem
  • Inventors, tinkerers and first-time founders at the early stage
  • Workers who found a smarter way to do things on the job
  • Community members with a fresh fix for a local need
  • Anyone who has tested, sketched or prototyped their idea, even roughly

Tips for a strong nomination

  1. Name the problem first. Judges need to understand the need before they assess the fix.
  2. Show the spark in action. A sketch, a prototype, a pilot or early feedback beats big promises.
  3. Keep it simple. Explain the idea clearly in a sentence or two.
  4. Say who it helps. Real people, real places, real difference.
  5. Be honest about what’s next. A clear next step shows how the idea can move forward.

Did you know?

Real-world inspiration

The Post-it Note grew from Spencer Silver’s removable adhesive and Art Fry’s search for a bookmark that would stay in place. A seemingly unhelpful discovery became a useful everyday product.

Where opportunity is growing

Ideas on the rise: tools that save time with AI, products that cut waste and simple apps that help people get local services faster.

Explore possibilities, build practical skills and look for ways to put your strengths to work. These examples are not job or income guarantees.

The Napkin That Changed a Neighborhood

An imagined example, not an actual IGNICON nominee, finalist or winner.

Imagine a bus driver named Rosa who notices kids waiting in the dark each winter morning. On a coffee-shop napkin she sketches a solar-powered light that flashes when the bus is five minutes away. A local hardware store helps her build one. Then ten. The idea isn’t fancy, but it’s safe, smart and simple. That’s the kind of spark this award is built for.

Your questions, answered

Does the idea need to be finished?

No. Early-stage ideas are welcome. Show what you have so far.

Can I nominate my own idea?

Yes. Adult self-nominations are welcome.

Will my idea be kept private?

Share only information you are comfortable submitting. Do not include trade secrets or confidential material; review the Terms and Privacy Policy before submitting.

Is there an age limit?

Adult nominees must be 18 or older, with no upper age limit. Younger achievers can be nominated through guardian-managed Junior IGNICON.

Review the Official Rules, Terms and Privacy Policy for participation and permissions.

01

Impact

30pts

The difference the work has made.

Judges weigh the real difference the work has made: who benefited, how much changed, and how lasting that change is. Scale matters less than clear, credible outcomes.

Useful evidence

  • Before-and-after figures or outcomes
  • Testimonials from people served
  • Press, reports or third-party recognition
Illustrative fictional innovator with a gold trophy; not an actual honoree
02

Original thinking and meaningful improvement.

Original thinking that meaningfully improves on what came before. Judges look for a new approach, a smarter process, or a fresh answer to a familiar problem.

Useful evidence

  • What was new and why it mattered
  • Prototypes, launches or patents
  • Comparison with the usual approach

  • Hard decisions and their results
  • Endorsements from colleagues

05

Community and purpose

10pts

Contribution to people and purpose.

Contribution beyond the entrant: to people, causes and the wider field. Judges look for purpose that shows up in action, not just in a mission statement.

Useful evidence

  • Volunteer, giving or outreach work
  • Partnerships with local groups
  • Access or opportunity created for others

Sharing is optional and never affects judging. Celebrate your nominee without changing their score. Social sharing, likes, votes and purchases of courses or other products do not count toward judged scores. People’s Pick is separate honorary recognition and carries no cash prize.

Include the nominee’s name and award category in your post. For Junior entries, only a parent or guardian may choose to share; the child does not need a social-media account. This is separate from written permission for IGNICON to publish a Junior profile or photo.
