About this award

Legends leave footprints. IGNICON Legend honors a lifetime of excellence: people whose work, character and influence have shaped their industry for years and opened doors for those who follow.

Who can enter?

  • Leaders whose work or impact fits this distinction
  • Nominations from others are welcome and free

What did they accomplish?

  • A clear account of the person or work
  • Specific actions and their effects
  • Voices of people who benefited

Special honors are not tied to one industry, so criteria differ from industry awards.

Make their story count

Who should be nominated

  • Industry veterans with long, respected careers
  • Pioneers who broke barriers for others
  • Mentors who trained a generation of talent
  • Leaders whose name is known and trusted in their field
  • People whose legacy will outlast their career

Tips for a strong nomination

  1. Tell the journey. Where did they start, and how far did they go?
  2. Highlight firsts. Barriers broken, records set, doors opened.
  3. Show the legacy. Who did they lift up? What still stands because of them?
  4. Include respect from peers. Quotes or honors from others in the field help.
  5. Keep it human. Lifetime awards are about people, not just résumés.

Real-world inspiration

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library began in 1995 and has delivered more than 200 million books to children. It shows how a sustained commitment can reach generations of families.

Where opportunity is growing

Experience creates opportunity: mentoring and encore careers let experienced workers share know-how with new generations.

Explore possibilities, build practical skills and look for ways to put your strengths to work. These examples are not job or income guarantees.

Forty Years of Firsts

An imagined example, not an actual IGNICON nominee, finalist or winner.

Imagine a welder named Gloria who, in the 1980s, was the only woman on her crew. She kept showing up, became a foreman, then started a training program that has welcomed hundreds of new welders of every background. Today, crews across her state carry her lessons. That’s a legacy. That’s a Legend.

Your questions, answered

How long a career is needed?

There is no fixed number of years in this editorial guidance. This award recognizes long-term, lasting impact; the Official Rules govern eligibility.

Can the nominee be retired?

Yes. A lasting contribution does not end at retirement.

Can I nominate someone posthumously?

Contact IGNICON before nominating for guidance on eligibility and permissions. This is not a promise that posthumous nominations are accepted.

Can I nominate myself?

Yes. Adult self-nominations are welcome, though peer nominations can help tell the story of a lasting legacy.

Review the Official Rules, Terms and Privacy Policy for participation and permissions.

01

Impact

30pts

The difference the work has made.

Judges weigh the real difference the work has made: who benefited, how much changed, and how lasting that change is. Scale matters less than clear, credible outcomes.

Useful evidence

  • Before-and-after figures or outcomes
  • Testimonials from people served
  • Press, reports or third-party recognition

02

Innovation

25pts

Original thinking and meaningful improvement.

Original thinking that meaningfully improves on what came before. Judges look for a new approach, a smarter process, or a fresh answer to a familiar problem.

Useful evidence

  • What was new and why it mattered
  • Prototypes, launches or patents
  • Comparison with the usual approach

How the entrant led, inspired and developed others. Judges value decisions under pressure, people brought along, and leadership shown with or without a title.

Useful evidence

  • Teams built, mentored or rallied
  • Hard decisions and their results
  • Endorsements from colleagues

05

Community and purpose

10pts

Contribution to people and purpose.

Contribution beyond the entrant: to people, causes and the wider field. Judges look for purpose that shows up in action, not just in a mission statement.

Useful evidence

  • Volunteer, giving or outreach work
  • Partnerships with local groups
  • Access or opportunity created for others

Sharing is optional and never affects judging. Celebrate your nominee without changing their score. Social sharing, likes, votes and purchases of courses or other products do not count toward judged scores. People’s Pick is separate honorary recognition and carries no cash prize.

Include the nominee’s name and award category in your post. For Junior entries, only a parent or guardian may choose to share; the child does not need a social-media account. This is separate from written permission for IGNICON to publish a Junior profile or photo.
